French Fries, The Homemade Way

What’s not to love about french fries?

I’ll admit it … they’re delicious, addicting, full of flavor and so convenient to order off of almost any menu. But do you really know what you’re eating when you order that simple and delicious ‘side of french fries’?

If you’ve been reading my blog before today you probably know where this is going. & No,I am not trying to “ruin” french fries for you ….

Sweet Potato French Fries

I am only trying to open your eyes and mind to realize that the process of cooking what we believe to be just a potato fried in oil and topped with salt is not as simple as we think….

Most fast food chains have over 20 ingredients in their french fries … including but not limited to MSG, GMO ingredients, artificial and chemical preservatives, food colorings and fillers.

All of these ingredients are unnecessary and harmful to our health.

A few years ago, one of my favorite food bloggers, Vani Hari, uncovered the shocking truth behind McDonalds french fries…. and not only was the long ingredient list shocking…. I was more concerned by the fact that the ingredient list in America compared to the ingredient list in the UK was completely & SIGNIFICANTLY different. French fries in the UK had significantly less ingredients and probably taste better too.

The amount of ingredients that companies add to food in america has no significant benefit other than the ability to preserve the food, allowing it to stay on the shelf longer and cutting food waste costs as well as making production costs cheaper as well when they avoid using pure, whole ingredients.

See for yourself below…

Did you know there is added ‘beef flavor’ in french fries? ‘hydrogenated’ oils full of transfat? & toxic additives such as TBHQ & dimethylpolysiloxane in your ‘potato french fries’? …. I just don’t understand. Not only is the list packed full of GMO’s and artificial chemical ingredients… it’s also SHOCKINGLY different from the french fries that McDonalds serves in the UK.

If they can make French Fries simpler & purer in the UK using only 4 ingredients…..why can’t they do the same for us in America?

It’s all about cost and profit. It’s not about your health.

It’s never actually been about the health of the consumer, no matter how hard they try to convince you with their ‘healthy additions’ family oriented TV commercials and ads promoting ‘apple slices’ available for the kids.

The same goes for so many other fast food chains and restaurants. Long story short…. the food you’re ordering isn’t as simple as you think. There is a lot of pre-processing and packaging that goes into that bag of frozen french fries before it gets dumped into a bowl of hot GMO oil and served on your plate, or in your to-go bag.

Think twice before you order, as I can only hope that you begin to care where your food comes from & most importunely know how it’s prepared. Asking your server only takes a few moments. But if you’re too shy to ask… there is always a better option: HOMEMADE. Homemade is always the best option whenever possible because you will ALWAYS be in control of the ingredients and most importantly you will know exactly what is going into your food.

& that is why I love this recipe. It is so simple. All you need is a few raw potatoes, an oven, a baking sheet and some basic spices in your cupboard.

How SIMPLE is that!? Get Cooking!!!

  5. Place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet in a preheated oven for 10 minutes.

Recipe Notes

Optional seasonings include paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, turmeric, oregano, rosemary and/or thyme. Get Creative with your seasonings based on the meal you'll be serving your fries with or the sauce you plan on dipping them in!

Remember to read the ingredients in your spices! Yes, even some spices have additives like cellulose and silicon dioxide to keep the spice from caking & some of them even contain MSG or other added 'flavors'. Make sure you are using pure, organic, single ingredient spices. I love the brand Simply Organic for that reason.

So AMAZING, So SIMPLE, and so much HEALTHIER for you compared to that order of french fries you would get while eating out.

Next time think twice about your order and if you don’t know whats in it, consider ordering that side salad instead.
